Artist Statement | hannahstevenson

I am a fine artist working in a variety of mediums including painting, printing and text based work. My most recent project is entitled "Play": an exploration of behaviours between adults and children during the process of making.

During the deliverance of various creative workshops with children and adults respectively, I noticed that the children I observed were immersed in the process of making: focused on the sensory experience of experimenting with different colours and textures, not focused on the end result. The adults I worked with were much more hesitant to lose themselves in the process, focused on their creation having to be "perfect".

"Play" is an exploration of these evident contrasts of behaviours between children and adults and questioning why this is. More importantly, it is an attempt to bring the playful, childlike wonder back into the orderly "perfectionist" grown up world.
